One of the main attractions in Copenhagen is the little mermaid statue at the harbor.

Be prepared to stand in line if you want your picture taken with this little lady! During my weekend in Copenhagen we first only walked by the statue on the broad walk, where this picture was taken. But the next day we were also passing it on a harbor boat trip on which we got some really interesting facts about the mermaid.

Vandals decapitated the mermaid twice, cut off her arms and poured paint over it. On two occasion the mermaid was draped in a burqa and a head scarf. But since 1963 the statue has been cleaned and fixed after every attack and remains on her rock on which she was placed 100 years ago.

It seems people in Copenhagen forgot that she was only suppose to be an inspiration from Hans Christians Andersens fairy tale “The little mermaid” and not an advertising pillar. God knows what they would have done to the ugly duckling..
